Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program

Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program:

The Family Sponsorship Program is an immigration pathway that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor certain family members to become permanent residents of Canada. The objective of this program is to reunite families and enable family members to live, work, and study in Canada permanently.

The Sponsor must:

The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident over 18 years old who lives in Canada or plans to live in the country when the sponsored family member arrives.

People who can be sponsored:

1. Spouse, Common-Law Partner, or Conjugal Partner:

  • Spouse: Must be legally married to the sponsor.
  • Common-Law Partner: They must have lived together for at least 12 months in a relationship similar to a marriage.
  • Conjugal Partner: Applies when the couple cannot live together due to reasons beyond their control, such as immigration restrictions.

2. Dependent Children:

  • Biological or adopted children under 22 years old who do not have a spouse or common-law partner.
  • Children over 22 years old may be sponsored if they are financially dependent on the sponsor due to a physical or mental disability.

3. Parents and Grandparents:

  • Citizens and permanent residents can also sponsor their parents and grandparents under the specific Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

4. Other Relatives:

  • In exceptional circumstances, the sponsor may bring other relatives to Canada, such as orphaned siblings, nieces, or nephews under 18 years old, who are unmarried and not in a common-law relationship.

1. Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident: The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and must reside in Canada or plan to return to Canada when the sponsored family member obtains residency.

2. Financial undertaking: The sponsor must commit to financially supporting the sponsored family member for a specified period. The sponsor must sign an agreement to provide financial support, which implies that the family member will not rely on Canadian social assistance.

  • For a spouse or partner, the financial undertaking is 3 years.
  • For dependent children, it is 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.
  • For parents and grandparents, the financial undertaking is 20 years.

3. Minimum necessary income (for some family members): The sponsor must demonstrate that they have sufficient income to support the sponsored family members, especially when sponsoring parents and grandparents. In this case, the sponsor must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI), which varies according to family size..

4. No serious criminal record or debts: The sponsor must not have been convicted of certain serious crimes, and must not have debts related to financial support for previously sponsored family members.

1. Check eligibility: The sponsor must confirm they meet the requirements to sponsor their family member, and that the sponsored family member is also eligible for the program.

2. Submit the sponsorship and permanent residence application:

  • Two applications are submitted simultaneously: one for family sponsorship and one for the sponsored family member’s permanent residence
  • Both application packages are sent together. Applications can be made online or using a physical form.

3. Assessment process:

  • Canadian authorities will review the applications to ensure the sponsor meets the financial and eligibility requirements. They will also assess whether the sponsored family member meets immigration criteria, such as health, criminal background, and security requirements.

4. Processing time:

  • The processing time for spouse or dependent child sponsorship applications is approximately 12 months.
  • Parent and grandparent applications have longer processing times, as they depend on the availability of spots in the program.

5. Approval and obtaining permanent residence:
If the application is approved, the sponsored family member will receive the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can move to Canada as a permanent resident.

Benefits of the program:

  • Family reunification: Facilitates the reunification of families, allowing spouses, children, and other close relatives to live together in Canada.
  • Access to benefits: Sponsored family members as permanent residents have access to healthcare, education, and other social benefits in Canada.

Conclusion:

The Family Sponsorship Program is an excellent pathway to reunite families in Canada, offering a stable and permanent immigration option for close relatives of citizens and permanent residents. Official Languages Proficiency

Canada has two official languages: English and French. Your ability to read, write, speak, and understand these languages helps determine your eligibility.

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is a scale used to assess your language proficiency. Your CLB score is determined through official language tests approved by the Canadian government. If you haven't yet done an official assessment, select the options that correspond with your ability.

Personal Net Worth

Personal net worth is the total value of what you own (assets) minus what you owe (liabilities). To calculate it, add up the value of all your assets, such as cash, investments, real estate or property, and other valuable possessions. Then subtract all your liabilities, like loans, mortgages, credit card debt, and other financial obligations. The result is your net worth, which reflects your overall financial health. If you are married or have a common-law partner, add their personal net worth to your own. Use this tool to convert your local currency to Canadian Dollars (CAD).
