Who is eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship

Anyone who is a permanent resident of Canada and has lived in the country for the required period may apply for citizenship, provided they meet the other criteria set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Exceptions:

Minors: Children under the age of 18 are not required to meet the residency requirement or take the citizenship test if one of their parents is already a Canadian citizen or if they are applying together with a parent.

Military personnel: Current or former members of the Canadian Armed Forces may be eligible for citizenship under special provisions with more flexible requirements.

Refugees and other special cases: In certain situations, time spent in Canada as a refugee or under temporary permits may count toward the required residency period if you later became a permanent resident.

These are the most common requirements, but there are special circumstances that may affect eligibility.

1. Criminal offences: If you have been convicted of an offence in Canada or another country within the last 4 years, you may not be eligible for citizenship until your sentence is completed.

2. Deportation order: If you are under a deportation order or appeal, you cannot apply for citizenship.

3. Fraud or misrepresentation: If the government discovers that you obtained your permanent residence or any other immigration status through fraud or misrepresentation, your citizenship application may be rejected, and you could lose your status.

4. Time spent outside Canada: Spending too much time outside Canada can affect your eligibility, as you must meet the physical presence requirement.
